Dec. 13, 1939–April 11, 2018

James L. Giffin, 78, of Osage, Wyo., went to rest with the Lord on April 11, 2018, at Weston County Health Services hospital, after a battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 13, 1939, at Newcastle hospital to Lloyd Otis Giffin and Ruth Inez Foltz Giffin,  James, the youngest of their six children, grew up on their family homestead where his Dad taught him to use a Spudder rig to drill water wells. James went to school from kindergarten through eighth grade in Osage, in Upton for ninth grade, and in Newcastle for 10th grade through graduation. He earned his associate degree at Park School of Business in Denver and served in the National Guard.

James met Marilyn on a Valentine’s Day blind date, and they married that May 19, 1961. Throughout their lives together, James enjoyed bragging about what a great cook Marilyn was. James worked as an accountant in Denver before returning to the family homestead to drill, service and repair water wells. His solid work ethic was passed on to his children, and he was proud to have had his three children attend UW at the same time.

James coached Little League baseball 1974-76, served nine years on the school board, helped organize and build the Osage dump site, was a past Master of A.F. & A.M. Lodge #13 in Newcastle, Wyo., and was a past Worthy Patron of OES Chapter #30, Newcastle. He enjoyed participating in sports while in school, then following his kids and grandkids on their teams, taking his own meticulous stats as they played. His generous nature and loving heart endeared him to family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and grandkids, gardening and loved sharing stories of his adventures.

James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn, of Osage; his children, Dave (Cheryl) Giffin of Midland, Texas, Phillip (Cris) Giffin of Bar Nunn, Wyo., and Susan (Ray) Miner of Moorcroft, Wyo.; grandchildren, Catrina (Will) Eyre, of Gillette, Wyo., Dan (Kaeleigh) of Wausau, Wisc., Jon of Midland, Texas, James N. BARBARA LOIS MORRISSEY JOHNSON

Sept. 5, 1934–April 30, 2018

Barbara Lois Morrissey Johnson was born in Lead, S.D., on Sept. 5, 1934, to William Lawrence and Anna Mabel Henderson Morrissey. She attended school in Lead, until they moved to the family farm at Boyd, Wyo., which turned out to be one of her most cherished places on earth. She spent many weekends of her life there, gardening and soaking her feet in the dam. She graduated from Newcastle High School in 1952.

Barb married her hero, Walter E. Johnson, on Nov. 4, 1952. They made their home in Newcastle. They were blessed with two boys, William and Daniel, who were the center of her world. Later came along daughters-in-law, Shawn and Sheri; and four wonderful grandchildren, Brooke Ann, Amanda Jo, Megan Lynn, and Matthew Walter.

Over the years, she was passionately known by many names: Sweetheart, Miss Barbara, the Good Witch of 3rd Avenue (who gave out lucky pennies), Aunt, Mom, utter mudder, and her favorite one she was most proud of, “Granny.”

Barb had many passions in her life, first and foremost being a wife, mother and Granny. Other passions were volunteering and giving a home to orphaned animals. There was not an animal alive that was too homely or broken up for her to love. She volunteered at the food bank, humane society and for the census bureau. Through the years, she worked as an operator at Mountain Bell, a nurses’ aide at the Weston County Hospital, and as an election clerk. Her church was a big part of her life as well, and she was always willing to help wherever needed. She served on the Vestry Board, the Alter Guild, taught Sunday school and helped with and supplied the homemade chokecherry syrup for their annual pancake supper. Many would come just to have her chokecherry syrup (but as for Barb it was peanut butter and ketchup). She also served on the Boyd Cemetery Board. For 11 years, running a day care at her home brought her much joy.

Among some of her other loves were cooking, baking, and canning. Her family always knew that when they sat down to supper on Wednesday nights there would be a new recipe on their plate. Some became family favorites while others were asked never to return! Sharing her baked goods, jams, jellies, syrup and bread and butter pickles with her friends and family filled her heart with happiness.

Barb lived a God-fearing life and was never known to have an idle hand or mind. She loved to read and learn new things, knit, craft and sew. She taught her daughter-in-law many of her mothering, baking, cooking, and canning secrets along with knitting. Sheri boasts of her mother-in-law and treasured the relationship she had with her. She was known by Sheri as her “utter mudder.”

Barb lived her last year of life in the Weston County Manor where she quickly became a favorite. She always made sure that there was a smile and a thank you said to everyone who helped her. She was very grateful for the wonderful care she received at her home there.

Barbara passed peacefully with her family around her on Monday, April 30, 2018, at her home at Weston County Manor.

She is survived by husband, Walter; sons, William of Newcastle, and Daniel (Sheri) of Sidney, Mont.; daughter-in-law, Shawn Zabka of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Brooke of Cheyenne, Amanda of Vaughn Mont., Megan and Matthew, both of Sidney; sister-in-law, Doris Mae Rogers of Gillette, Wyo.; niece, Shiela (George) Rhoades of Gillette; and brother-in-law. Carl (Pat) Johnson of Panacea, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother and two sisters, Yvonne and Patricia.

Services for Barbara will be Monday, May 7, at 10 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal in Newcastle.

Memorials may be made in Barb’s memory to Christ Church Episcopal Alter Guild, or The Weston County Humane Society.

Mary Ann Robinson was born May 29, 1944, to Kenneth and Nellie (Salisbury) Brown in Lemmon, S.D. She was the youngest of five siblings and attended school in Lemmon and Newcastle, Wyo. She first met the love of her life, Lucian Robinson, on July 15, 1967, at the Antler Bar in Newcastle, and they were married a year later on Feb. 9, 1968, in Buffalo, Wyo.

Mary Ann and her husband owned the Silver Spur Bar, she was a cook at the Hub Café, and she was also a certified nursing assistant for many years, working for Sharon’s Home Health until she retired. After living in Dayton, Wyo., for six months, they moved to Moorcroft, where they built their life.

She loved to listen to western music, watch old westerns, embroider quilts for her grandchildren and tend to her yard and add in new flowers. She was an active bowler for over 20-plus years. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WALTER ERNEST JOHNSON

March 6, 1926–May 7, 2018

Walter Ernest Johnson was born in Long Pine, Neb., on March 6, 1926, to Frank Jelmer and Florence Mabel Davis Johnson. He attended 10 years of school in Manville, Wyo., then went to work as a farm and ranch hand to help his family make it through some tough times. He was also known to make a buck or two killing and selling rabbits. He tried to get into the army in 1943, but had to wait until after he turned 18. He was a private first class in World War II from 1944 to 1946. He was a PFC radio man with the 8th Armored Division, tank battalion, helping liberate the besieged city of Bastogne at the Battle of the Bulge alongside General George Patton.

Walter married his sweetheart, Barbara Lois Morrissey, on Nov. 4, 1952. They had two sons, William and Daniel, who gave him two beloved daughters-in-law, Shawn and Sheri. While his sons and new daughters brought him much joy and pride, his greatest treasures were his four grandchildren: Brooke Ann, Amanda Jo, Megan Lynn, and Matthew Walter.

Walter was no stranger to hard work, he worked for Updike Brothers for more than 46 years on workover rigs and later on as a mechanic in the shop. After he retired, he continued to work and help repair on everything from railroad equipment to lawn mowers for Jim White and for friends and neighbors. He could often be found doing odd jobs and fixing things at the church or crossing off items on the neverending “honey-do” list. This list usually included juicing chokecherries and rhubarb for Barb’s famous syrups and jellies. We always said that it just would not have tasted the same without his special juicing technique. The work that brought him the most satisfaction was building swing sets and a playhouse for his grandchildren.

He also served his church as an usher, as a senior warden for four years and as a Vestry Board member. Walter was proud to be involved in the annual pancake supper, where he served as the pancake cooker and helped build the current pancake griddle.

When it came to his grandchildren, Walter was one of the most gentle and kind men anyone could ever know. He was not afraid to sit in kids’ furniture and have a tea party, or let his grandchildren get him in trouble by writing all over him with markers.

He loved to be the taste tester to any of Barb’s new recipes and never left a plate empty. He could often be found tinkering at his work bench, watching basketball games, or his new found passion UFC mixed martial arts. When asked if his family could get him anything, he would give that funny little grin and say, “I could take a shot of good ol’ Jack Daniels.” While he tried many times to quit, he just couldn’t give up his love of chewing, much to Barb’s dismay.

Walter lived at the Weston County Manor for the last year of life and loved everyone that cared for him, just as much as they loved him. Some of the Manor staff have shared some pretty comical “Walt and Barb” stories with the family.

He is survived by his sons, William of Newcastle and Daniel (Sheri) of Sidney, Mont.; daughter-in-law, Shawn Zabka of Cheyenne; four grandchildren, Brooke of Cheyenne, Amanda of Vaughn, Mont., Megan and Matthew, both of Sidney; sister, Doris Mae Rogers of Gillette Wyo.; niece, Shiela (George) Rhodes of Gillette; and his brother, Carl (Pat) Johnson of Panacea, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Johnny.

Walter passed away May 7, 2018, the same day that the love of his life, Barbara, was laid to rest. Just as they were inseparable in life, they are now together in heaven.

Services will be held on May 26, 2018, at the Christ Church Episcopal at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made in Walter’s name to the Christ Church Episcopal Alter Guild or the Weston County Humane Society.
